About Me
Hi, I'm Matt / マット.
Canadian product leader with 9+ years shipping software people love. From esports marketplaces and AI-powered builders, to VR/AR. Currently leading our data and AI pillars at ArborXR, preparing a long-term move to Japan.
AboutWho I am and how I think about product
I’m Matthew Mayer, a Canadian who loves game development, new and immersive technology, learning, and my work as a product leader. My career and work is an important part of my life. Working alongside incredible colleagues I can learn from, to drive value to users, is fulfilling to me. All roles in my mind focus on, at the end of the day, driving value for the business. As a product leader, I believe my role is to deeply understand our user problems and needs, the market we operate in, and how our business functions, to prioritize and distill that information to my internal stakeholders in such a way that we can work together to build solutions that drive value for the business, and our users. I’ve always thrived finding ways I can have the most impact, then throwing myself in the fire to figure out how to accomplish it.
Outside of work, I’m either studying Japanese, grinding ranked in The Finals, bouldering, or more recently, figuring out what to build next with the help of AI.
I’m currently working at ArborXR, the leading Virtual and Augmented Reality MDM platform, helping power how companies like Walmart, Axon, UPS, and Pfizer revolutionize their training and execution. My role covers our acquihired Insights product suite, an open-source SDK for Unity and Unreal that powers a suite of AI and data features. I’m also responsible, alongside our AI Platform Engineer, for our company’s AI strategy and feature roadmap, as well as our content partner ecosystem spanning a two-sided content marketplace and developer portal.
I’m always looking for new and ambitious challenges, with a team of talented, passionate people who value outcomes over output, building something valuable that I believe in.

日本との関わりMy life with Japan
In 2024, I spent a year living in Japan on a Working Holiday visa while continuing to work remotely for my Canadian employer. I tried to treat that year not simply as time abroad, but as a chance to understand everyday life in Japan more deeply: using the language whenever I could, building real friendships, and learning through daily routines as much as through travel.
After returning to Canada, I became much more serious about building a long-term future in Japan, both personally and professionally. Since the beginning of 2025, I have been taking Japanese lessons twice a week with a private tutor, working through my third textbook, and studying vocabulary, grammar, and kanji every day. When I returned to Canada, I mostly knew greetings and scattered words. My tutor now assesses me at around JLPT N3 level, and I am working toward reaching an N2-equivalent level by the end of this year.
In May 2025, I visited Miyazaki for a close friend’s wedding, where I met my now-wife. Since then, I have continued visiting Japan, including for work opportunities with companies such as Sony, KDDI, Meta, and NTT, while becoming increasingly certain that I want to build my life and career there long term. I am now preparing to relocate to Japan, continuing my language studies, and selectively exploring opportunities where I can apply my product management experience in the Japanese market.
I am currently preparing to relocate to Japan long term through the spouse visa process.

Battlefy
Business & Marketing Associate → Product Manager & Platform Team Lead
The leading esports tournament platform
Directly after finishing my diploma program for Marketing Management: Entrepreneurship, I was offered a full-time position at Battlefy, at the time, the leading esports tournament platform. I chose this opportunity over completing my BBA because, during my post-secondary learning I had both participated in tournaments as a player, and founded and fostered an over 500-person community in Oshawa, organizing in-person tournaments across 6 cities in Ontario. Because of this, joining Battlefy, who was just about to raise a Series A, had 1M+ MAU, and over 100,000 organizers using their platform, felt like a place I could both add value while also learning.
I joined Battlefy as a Business & Marketing Associate, but within months I discovered an opportunity after researching the Activision Blizzard Hearthstone community, competing platforms, and understanding their need for a custom format I thought we could easily support to put us ahead in the minds of the rapidly growing playerbase. I came up with a pitch, forecasted impact, and a contextual breakdown, and met with our lead designer and an engineering lead, who both loved the idea. We prioritized and shipped it in secret as a passion project we believed in, and once it launched, we were able to win what turned into a multi-year partnership with Activision Blizzard for Hearthstone Masters, becoming one of our highest revenue deals at that point.
After that, the CEO told me that what I was doing was Product Management, and that he wanted to fast track me into that career. His pitch was that a Product Manager cares most about providing value both to the user and the business, deeply understands problems and prioritization, and provides the team with context to empower them to solve these problems together. He explained that I should operate as if I was the CEO. They sent me to courses at UBC outside of work, and I was promoted to Associate Product Manager.
From there, I spent 4 years at Battlefy, leading some of our biggest engagements like the National PUBG League, and the world’s first official Nintendo Super Smash Bros. tournaments, working with Nintendo directly. Beyond that I worked with Cygames, Stunlock Studios, Zotac, and more, building custom products to support their competition aspirations. I also co-led a skunkworks project, building a mobile app called SCOUT that went through 9 major iterations over 6 months, with 200k+ installs, designed to help Fortnite players find teammates to play with.
As I progressed, I took on more ownership: leading the support team, then pitching to become the Platform Team lead. Battlefy was a two-sided marketplace: passionate organizers running massive online tournaments, and millions of players finding and competing in them. Revenue came primarily from branded engagements, where companies like Amazon, Coca-Cola, Red Bull, and game developers like Activision Blizzard, PUBG, and EA created custom competitive experiences. My team redesigned the entire platform to prioritize and drive users to branded engagements, and to identify the best organizers to help us run them. I revamped our recommendations system, drove a partner program, and ultimately we increased tournament participation for branded engagements by 5.7x, which drove up both repeat engagements and average deal size.
Unbounce
Product Manager, Smart Builder
AI/ML-first landing page platform · 250+ employees
At this point in my career, I was reporting directly to the CEO, and my product mentor had moved on from the company. I had the opportunity to go to Unbounce, a company that had just raised $54 million to completely replatform their landing page builder as an AI/ML-first product. I would be learning under the lead on that project, an experienced product leader, but she left the company just weeks after I joined. I made a pitch to leadership to let me try running the project, and took over Smart Builder, leading a 60-person cross-functional team to bring it to market.
I improved our product development process and discovery workflows, introducing agile practices to shift the team to ship value weekly, learn, and iterate, a big change from their previous release cadence of 2 months.
We shipped Smart Builder and surpassed our expectations for it, increasing our most important company metric, overall first-subscription rate, from 47.26% to 55.7% within the first month, driving meaningful revenue.
ZLeague
Founding Product Manager
Gaming platform · $50M+ raised from A16Z
ZLeague had just raised over $50 million from A16Z and was looking for a founding Product Manager, reporting directly to the COO, the ex-Head of Expansion at UberEats. I managed two junior product managers and helped define how we built product. I directly led our New Games team and our Stats Data Infrastructure team, responsible for the company’s expansion strategy: deep market research presented to leadership, then execution. We shipped our custom League of Legends and Halo: Infinite experiences, which became our fastest growing and highest retaining experiences on the platform.
However, the company had no monetization strategy, and eventually performed a mass layoff and pivot, reducing the team by 80%+, a layoff that I was a part of.
ArborXR
Staff Product Manager: Program Intelligence & Developer Ecosystem
Leading VR/AR MDM platform
The generous severance gave me the opportunity to reflect on my career and really understand what challenge I wanted to take on next. That’s when I found ArborXR, and as someone who’s been extremely optimistic about the future value of VR and AR, it seemed too good to pass up.
I was hired originally to work with our lead Android and backend architects, working directly with our OEM partners (Meta, PICO, HTC, Lenovo) to build custom pre-installed software for our MDM, deeply integrated into headsets to enable zero-touch enrollment.
From there, I’ve been able to do a myriad of things at ArborXR. The team was always trusting and I was able to be autonomous in a meritocratic culture: improving our product and prioritization processes, building out our developer ecosystem, pitching and leading our Demo Apps initiative, and driving impact for the business. In my 3.5 years at ArborXR I now lead our AI and agentic initiatives and strategy, our developer ecosystem, and head our Insights product (formerly InformXR, a company we acquired).
I love the work I do at Arbor, the value we provide to our customers, and observing how they use ArborXR to help them change the way the world learns. I learn something new every day, and while the work is complex, it’s incredibly fulfilling, and the team I get the privilege to work alongside is incredible.
